Dr. Berg talks about why women crave chocolate during their period. There is a certain chemical in chocolate called PEA (Phenethylamine) which increases dopamine in their bodies. Also, low estrogen is linked to decreasing dopamine neurons decreasing by 30%. PEA (Phenethylamine) and dopamine increases mood, energy, focus and decreases stress. But, during the menstrual cycle, women crave due to an alteration in the dopamine receptors because of fluctuations of estrogen.
