Benjamin Perry was in his first year at Union Theological Seminary when he heard a question

that shook him.

I had a professor who asked us to remember the last time that we wept.

We were talking about the book of lamentations, I think, and he wanted to dig into just

the experience of weeping.

So the professors split the class into groups.

And as people are going around to share, I realized that I had not cried, let alone wept,

in more than a decade.

The last time I could really remember crying was like middle school.

It was unexpected and kind of alienating.

I was like, that's it, because everybody else is like sharing all these beautiful stories

about, oh my god, you know, my grandmother died and we had this moment and we cried together

and I felt this really, and I'm sitting there with nothing.
