I'd sometimes say things on the program that are mostly rhetorical.

And yesterday I offered to explain to anybody who was

confused about why the events of the previous day had caused such a thickening of response,

such a complete transformation of public discourse in the context of Israel and Gaza. And I offered

to explain it. And actually, quite a few of you have

asked me to. And I thought I had yesterday, but looking back, it was a fairly meager explanation.

My slightly odd obsession with the idea of your ears pricking up when your own hometown gets

mentioned in the news. And the inevitable multiplication of concern,

multiplication of care when people from your own country, and this applies to everybody,

this applies to government, to media, to civilian, to citizen, people from your own country

are killed in, even if there's a natural disaster, a tsunami or an earthquake, if someone

from Britain is killed, it will get much, much, much, much, much more coverage to a factor of

millions than the death of the natives of the country where the tragedy has hit. And I thought

that was fairly self-explanatory. I thought that was fairly clear. And, and I still do.

But here's a thing. I don't want to say even I, because that sort of casts me in some sort
