Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know.

0:06.2

Nobody ever wants to trade down in the NFL draft,

0:08.8

but it could be an option for the Jets this year with the seventh overall pick,

0:11.9

and a trade down could be much more valuable than you think.

0:15.3

I'll explain why today on Lockdown Jets.

This is a daily podcast covering the New York Jets with new episodes each day through the week, Monday through Friday. Today we have our weekly mailbag show. Each Wednesday, we try and do a mailbag with listener questions. The NFL draft is approaching, and I turn it over to you to ask your questions. Our first question, John, every year I want the Jets to trade back and accumulate draft capital. Is there a spot in the draft you think is too low to drop

1:11.5

in the first round? That's a great question. I think that you're in the minority if you want the

1:16.9

jets to trade down every year. I'm with you. I think trading down is a really solid strategy.

1:22.4

And I'm going to get into that in a bit. But to answer the question, in theory, no, there's not, there's not a spot that's too far to trade down to. It's just a question of how much do I get in return? Because if I'm trading down from seven to 10, I'm not going to need as much as I need to trade down from seven to 20. You know, the further you fall back, the more you've got to get it in return. So it really depends on, you know, how much

1:44.6

you're getting back, you know, if there was a team at 25 that was offering, you know, three first

1:49.9

round picks and three second round picks, those 25, two loaded drop, of course not. But I also think

1:55.0

that there's a very imperfect understanding of how draft picks should be valued in the NFL.

2:01.4

Now, most teams use the, it's called the Cowboys chart.

2:04.2

It's called the Jimmy Johnson trade chart.

2:06.5

It was kind of revolutionized by the Dallas Cowboys, late 80s, early 90s.

2:11.4

The Cowboys essentially did research on how draft trades typically turn out.

2:16.6

They assigned a point value to each pick.

2:35.0

So typically when you make a trade during the NFL draft, you say, okay, well, the first pick is worth this many points. If we're going to trade down from one, we've got to get that many points of return. So it could be the fifth pick and this pick. So essentially the idea behind the Cowboys chart is each pick is assigned a number of points. at the end of the day, the picks that you send out should equal or come close to equaling the number of points for the picks

2:38.9

you receive back. But it's been proven through the years that these really inaccurately measure

2:44.5

how much picks are really worth. So a while back, a couple of guys, Jason Fitzgerald, who runs the great salary cap
