Summary

If you’ve been carrying the invisible weight of family life, the planning, the remembering, the organising, the worrying, this episode will help you feel understood, validated, and far less alone. When I asked the Motherkind community what felt hardest right now, the same theme kept coming up again and again: The mental load is relentless. And so many of us are quietly drowning under it. So in this episode, I’ve brought together three powerful voices to help us understand what the mental load really is, why it falls so heavily on mothers, and how we can start to rebalance it. First, Dr Samantha Hiew explains why modern mothers feel so overwhelmed — not because we’re failing, but because we’re carrying more cognitive and emotional labour than ever. She breaks down what overload does to our memory, mood and sense of self. Next, Dr Morgan Cutlip shares the five common behaviours that quietly block partner involvement and contribute to resentment. She introduces her “within work” and “between work” framework and offers simple, compassionate steps to shift long-standing patterns. Finally, Eve Rodsky reframes communication in a way that changes everything. She shows how we’re already communicating the load — often indirectly — and why shifting how we talk about domestic life unlocks shared responsibility. Her CPE “mustard” method explains why full ownership (not reminders) is the real game-changer. In this episode, you’ll learn:✨ What the mental load is and why it lands so heavily on mothers The habits that unintentionally shut down partner involvement How to communicate more effectively and reduce friction What “full ownership” looks like and why it frees up mental space This conversation is for every mother who’s ever wondered why she’s so tired, why she holds everything in her head, and why it feels like there’s no space left for herself. You’re not imagining it, and you’re not failing. The load is simply too heavy to carry alone. family. You are so welcome here. You know, in my early years of motherhood, I didn't understand

0:28.0

this phrase called the mental load. I knew I had no time, of course. I knew my mind never stopped

0:34.0

thinking ahead. I always felt like I was about to forget something. Then I learned

0:39.5

the term the mental load doing this podcast and it all made sense. So the mental load is the

0:45.4

invisible work that it takes to run a household and a family. It's the cognitive and emotional work

0:53.2

of anticipating needs, noticing what's missing, making

0:56.2

decisions, planning, organising, and remembering all the things. Now, here's the thing with

1:01.2

the mental load. You can reduce it a little. You can do layers. You can simplify where you can. You can

1:06.7

set up systems. But ultimately, it's part of having a family. You're now responsible for running

1:12.0

other people's lives. But what is so important is that it doesn't just all fall to us, the women.

1:20.8

The data shows that it does predominantly fall to women, whether we're also doing paid work or not.

1:26.7

And that is simply not fair,

1:27.8

because the impact is huge. We have less free time, more stress, more pressure, and put simply more on

1:33.6

our plates. And what I keep hearing from my community is that you know what the mental load is.

1:38.2

You're living every day. But how do you communicate it in a clear way to others so that you don't get defensive, they don't

1:46.7

get defensive and you can have a really productive conversation about how you are going to

1:52.7

share the mental load, whether you're in a marriage or a partnership or you're co-parenting

1:56.7

or your solo. I think it's really important to think about who are the people in my life

2:00.6

that want to support me and how can I communicate? How can we share this better? So for today's

2:08.4

episode, I have the three most impactful pieces of advice I've heard on the mental load.

2:13.6

And I'm sharing it with you here right now. I know how valuable your time is. So these are the three
