The inspiration for this episode comes from a walk with my dogs. My puppy, This!, was on leash, and my adult dogs were milling about freely. All of a sudden, a large bunny crossed our path 5 meters ahead. My adult dogs did not really notice the rabbit as it was the equivalent of white noise for them. For my puppy, it was a LOUD noise, a siren, she for sure noticed! Is it that my puppy just does not get my training, or is it that she has just started her
education?
In the episode you'll hear:
• My checklist of 5 items to include in your training to ensure your dog gets it.
• The layers of learning that I put into my dog training and for my students.
• What our layers of learning are from Kindergarten through to University and beyond.
• Why our dogs need a structured educational program.
• The reason we don't control our dog but look at the environment.
• What I do instead of saying "Leave It!" to my dogs.
• All the things that I teach my dogs to help dim the loud noises like bunnies or cats.
• Why to progress your dog's decision making, so decisions become bigger and better.
• What I do that is different to old-school dog training programs.
• The importance of congruency and consistency.
• Reasons why some dogs just don't get it, including fear and a dog's purpose.
• How structured building blocks create transformation and confidence.
• Why we want an engaged, safe environment that encourages learning.
• About balancing success with challenges and the relationship with dopamine.
• Why rehearsals of success lead to successful performances.

| 0:00.0 | This past weekend I was out walking my dogs. I had the puppy on leash. My adult |
| 0:13.4 | dogs were kind of milling about when all of a sudden a bunny, rather large bunny kind of crossed |
| 0:19.9 | our path. I don't know, maybe five meters ahead. |
| 0:23.0 | Now, the adult dogs kind of looked up and then just kept doing what they were doing. |
| 0:27.4 | Because to those adult dogs, that was white noise. That was like, oh yeah, there's a rock, |
| 0:32.5 | there's some dead grass, there's a tree and there's a bunny. And to the puppy, however, |
| 0:37.3 | that was a loud noise. That was not |
| 0:39.0 | white noise. That was like a police sirens, a spotlight. And hello, did you guys not just |
| 0:45.3 | see that moving critter just go like right in front of us? Is it that the puppy just doesn't get |
| 0:52.2 | my training? Or is it the puppy's just, you know, ideally, I'd |
| 0:56.5 | like to think the puppy is just on the learning phase. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to |
| 1:02.3 | shape by dog. Today, we're going to talk about dog training. Why, it seems like some dogs just |
| 1:08.1 | don't get it. And I'm going to give you a checklist of five items |
| 1:11.8 | that I think are pretty important to make sure you've got included in your training program |
| 1:16.1 | when you want to make sure your dogs get it. I'm also going to share with you the layers of learning |
| 1:22.4 | that I put into my own dog training, both for my own dogs and for all of my students, both those |
| 1:28.6 | that come here in person and the thousands of students that work with us online. So, if you |
| 1:34.4 | think of the human education process, there's layers of learnings there, right? It starts like |
| 1:41.1 | in pre-K, pre-k kindergarten. There was no pre-kindergarten back when I was in school. |
| 1:45.4 | But in pre-kindergarten, you know, you're getting excited about going away from home and |
| 1:50.4 | you're excited about what you learn today. And you're really, you're learning a little bit of |
| 1:55.1 | impulse control, right? You don't just see the kids playing with something and you grab it |
