Summary

Looking around in 2025, it's hard not to see the outright rejection of classical beauty. From Art to Architecture, fashion to physical beauty trends, it is clear that something has been lost in societies perception of beauty. But this is not a new phenomenon. As society has rejected truth, it has also rejected the concept of objective beauty. Today we will discuss where this hatred for the beautiful came from, why it has become so pervasive, and how to deal with a world that calls ugly things beautiful and beautiful things oppression.

We're looking around in 2025 and really all of the, I don't know, most of the 20th century and part of the 21st, there seems to be something of an assault on what we might call classical beauty.

0:12.3

And I'm not just referring to the Sydney-Sweeney ad, which people apparently thought was an homage to Hitlerarian eugenics, where as most of us just thought it was kind of a quirky

jeans commercial. I'm talking about everything from architecture to modern art to music.

There seems to be a rejection of, again, that notion of classical beauty. And some of this

0:36.0

seems to be rooted in this idea that beauty is

0:38.0

nothing more than in the eye of the beholder, that it's purely subjective. But still other

0:43.4

schools have thought on this differ pretty significantly. And today what we're going to be

0:48.7

discussing is really this underlying question of, is beauty purely subjective or is there some objectivity to it?

0:57.1

And why does it seem more and more?

They can look at a, I don't know, a piece of artwork.

1:03.1

You can look at a photo shoot.

You can look at a piece of architecture.

And you can almost instantly identify the political ideology of whoever took the

picture, posed for the photo, built the building, or made the painting. Because that's interesting.

1:20.5

And so today we're going to be discussing the question, is beauty objective or is it subjective?

1:25.7

And what do people's beliefs on this subject tell us about how they view

the world? All that and more coming up on this episode of Making the Argument. I'm your host,

the Oracle of Virginia, Christian Heinz. I don't expect you to call me beautiful. I'm not going down that route. I'm not going down that route. Okay. So we're going to kick this right off. The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to ask this question between objectivity and subjectivity of beauty. beauty we're going to offer some various kind of viewpoints on this, on why people believe it falls into one category or the other.
