Do you wonder why there are good new medicines for some diseases and no alternatives for others? In this episode, we delve into the revision of the EU's pharmaceutical framework and discuss its history and importance.

| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to Giving Health a Voice, the latest podcast from EFA. We had wished today to talk about the |
| 0:07.7 | proposal from the Commission for a revision of the pharmaceutical legislation in the European Union, |
| 0:12.8 | but we're not able to do that because the Commission hasn't yet adopted its proposal. So instead |
| 0:17.7 | what we'll talk about is why this piece of legislation is so important, what has |
| 0:22.1 | delayed the proposal from the Commission, who's involved in the debate once the Commission |
| 0:27.8 | has adopted it, and what we'd like to see as a result of its revision. |
| 0:32.8 | In this episode of Giving Health a Voice, we will discuss the revision at the EU's legislative framework |
| 0:38.0 | regulating the pharmaceutical sector. This framework makes sure that all EU member states |
| 0:43.1 | are following the same regulations, providing a single market for medicines and that these |
| 0:47.2 | medicines are of the same quality and effectiveness. Plus, the prices that are charged |
| 0:51.7 | for them offer incentives for the industry to continue to innovate and develop new treatments. |
| 0:58.5 | My name is Fraser Goodwin, and I'm filling in for our regular host, Milka Sokolovich. |
| 1:08.0 | With me, I have Rosa Castro, the senior policy manager for healthcare delivery here at the European Public Health Alliance, and someone has been deeply involved in the discussions helping with Commission to prepare their proposal, including discussions with the European Medicine Agency. |
| 1:23.4 | Rosa, I'd like to ask you first, what is the background of this EU framework? Why has |
| 1:29.4 | legislation been so important for medicines in the past? Thank you, Fraser. And to ask that |
| 1:35.4 | question, let me first take you a little bit back in history, because this pharmaceutical framework |
| 1:41.2 | in the EU was developed after quite a dramatic case that happened |
| 1:45.5 | in the late 1950s. |
| 1:48.0 | So what happened then was that a German pharmaceutical company discovered that a medicine |
| 1:53.0 | that was developed for treating respiratory infections was actually quite good in helping pregnant |
| 1:59.1 | women with morning sickness symptoms. |
| 2:01.6 | This medicine was called thalidomite, and it became quite a popular medicine used by women across Europe. |
