Summary

Whether you're aware of it or not, public health messaging shapes many aspects of our lives. The way medical institutions and the government communicate messages to do with our health (like when to get the flu shot or how often to wash your hands) is often the link between science and society. This week on TED Health, pediatrician and scientist Peter Hotez joins our host Shoshana Ungerleider for an expansive conversation surrounding the visibility of science in culture and its public reception.

0:12.8	Today I have the honor of speaking with Dr. Peter Hotez, the co-director of the Center

0:30.5	Oh, thanks for having me, it's great to see you and talk to you.
0:34.2	So I want to talk about the COVID-19 vaccine that you helped to develop.
0:38.0	It's patent-free and you are nominated for a 2022 Nobel Peace Prize for this.
0:44.3	And this is especially important for low and middle-income countries in the COVID-19 response.
0:48.7	Tell us about this vaccine.
0:50.4	We've been developing vaccines for the last 20 years at our Texas Children's Hospital
0:55.3	Center for Vaccine Development around this idea that there are vaccines that the
1:00.3	pharma companies are probably not going to make.
1:03.2	Our approach is a bit different.
1:04.8	While we have research programs around innovation, we also are committed to working with vaccine
1:10.4	producers and low and middle-income countries.
1:12.6	And most of them currently produce their own recombinant hepatitis B vaccine, which is
1:19.0	made through microbial fermentation and yeast.
1:21.1	It's been around a few decades.
1:22.7	It's a vegan vaccine.
1:24.5	No animal cells, human cells.
