You probably know that shark attacks are pretty rare. You have a greater chance of being struck dead by lightning than being killed by a shark.

Well, it's not irrational. People are afraid of sharks for three big psychological reasons,

and they all have to do with the way our brains perceive risk.

So reason number one, we worry more about risks that involve a lot of pain and suffering.

Basically, even though you're way more likely to die of a heart attack than a shark attack,

the idea of being torn limb from limb by a shark, pretty terrifying.

Heart attacks seem a lot less painful in comparison.

Reason number two, we worry more about risks that involve uncertainty.
