understanding the controversial review into the government's counterterrorism programme,

Prevent.

Last Wednesday,

the William Shore Cross review into Prevent was published by the Home Office.

It had set out to understand how effectively this strand of the government's counterterrorism strategy worked,

and how it could be improved.

My first duty as home secretary is to keep the British people safe.

William Shore Cross has led a superb independent review of Prevent for which I am very grateful.

The review is unflinching. Prevent needs major reform.

Over months last year, several of its findings were leaked,

and the review itself was boycotted before it even began.

Shore Cross has made 34 recommendations,

and while extremist violence on the far right has seen a rapid rise,

his review concludes that Prevent needs to refocus on the threat of Islamist terror.

Prevent's mission is to turn people away from extremist ideas,

to stop radicalisation spreading, and keep Britain safe from terrorist attacks.

It funds community projects. It works with young people.

It trains teachers and nurses to spot potential extremism.

Prevent has always had a difficult reputation.
