We begin in Peru because after days of protest from supporters of the outsted president Pedro Castillo, the new government has declared a state of emergency.

The Peruvian Defence Minister announced a 30-day state of emergency because of what he said are acts of vandalism and violence.

I spoke to the journalist Dan Collins in the capital Lima and asked him what all this means.

This is a 30-day as you mentioned nationwide state of emergency so that includes the entire country of course.

It means that civil liberties are suspended throughout the entire country. That includes the right to assembly and the right to freedom of movement.

And also means that the military will help the police restore control. Of course this will cause some disruption coming up to Christmas as many people will be traveling to visit relatives.

But the government is still yet to define whether there will be a nighttime curfew as well.

Mostly this will be clearing roadblocks and reopening airports. There have been many roadblocks across the country blocking all the major trunk roads and over airports such as Arachie,

The protest erupted a week ago after Petro Castillo was ousted by the Congress when he attempted to dissolve the chamber and rule by decree.
