Summary

Why does God make us wait? What do we do when he doesn’t seem to move fast enough? Could his delay mean he plans to give us something better? In today’s episode, Luke shares how Luke 8:40–56 shows that Jesus’s timing is better than ours, and his answers are often greater than what we asked for. Read the Bible with us in 2026! Welcome to 10-minute Bible Talks, where we connect the Bible to your life and the time it takes to get to work.

Today, we are going to be looking at Luke chapter 8.

But before we get into it, I just want to say I've been really enjoying our time in the gospel of Luke.

0:21.4

I've been following along with the 10-minute Bible talk reading plan myself, reading through this gospel alongside

0:26.7

the podcast. And there are just things that keep jumping out to me, the more I sit with it.

0:31.0

One thing I've noticed is that Luke is a really careful writer. He's intentional. He doesn't

0:35.0

just throw stories together randomly. He's a historian, but he's

0:38.9

also a storyteller. At the same time, and the way he arranges his material is doing something.

0:44.4

Sometimes the way he puts stories together is supposed to teach us things. One of the things I

0:49.1

keep noticing and keep pointing out in these episodes is how much Luke loves putting two stories

0:54.1

side by side. We saw it a

0:56.0

couple episodes ago in Luke 5 with the leper and the paralyzed man. We saw it last time in Luke 7 with

1:01.3

the Centurion and the widow. And guess what? I'm sorry to say if this is disappointed to you,

1:05.8

but it's going to happen again today. We have two stories, two people. But actually today

1:10.1

in Luke 8, they're a part of the same

1:12.5

story. And so just like before, Luke is teaching us something about Jesus through the contrast and the

1:18.1

similarities between these two people and how Jesus treats them. He's teaching us something about who he is,

1:23.7

who they are, where they come from, and what they're're carrying and what happens to them when they get to

1:28.8

Jesus. And so that's what we're going to look at today. And the thread running through both stories

1:33.8

is this, God is always on time. Let's get into it. We pick up in Luke chapter 8, verse 40. Now when Jesus

1:42.6

returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him.

1:46.4

Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus' feet, pleading with him to
