Welcome back to the Dershow. By the time you see this show, I will be in Israel, hopefully

0:09.0

meeting with people in the new government and assessing the political situation in Israel.

0:17.4

But even before I do a show from Israel directly, I wanted to comment on the last election

0:28.7

and the implications of the last election for the United States. Israel and the United States

0:33.9

have a tremendous amount in common. Voters vote about the same way the country is deeply

0:42.3

divided between right and left. It has moved more to the right than it had previously done

0:51.4

and the most recent election in Israel resulted in a government that will have in it some pretty

United States. But there's been a movement to the right in Israel and a lot of my friends who

1:53.4

are liberal, many of them, not all of whom are Jewish, most of whom are supporters of Israel,

1:59.9

have expressed concern. Why should Israel be moving to the right? Well, there are a lot of good

2:07.0

reasons for it and I understand it completely. Let's start with the most obvious reason.

2:13.0

As a result of work done by people like me and people like Elie Wiesel and Erwin Kotler and

2:23.0

others who worked on the Soviet dissident and Jewry movement close to a million, a million

2:32.4

former citizens and their children of the Soviet Union moved to Israel and became Israeli citizens.

2:40.9

Now these are people who have been oppressed for years and years by communism, by socialism,

2:49.8

by the left. It denied them the right to practice their religion, the right to earn a living,
