Corzine welcome back. Good to be here. Yeah, so we find ourselves in the Christmas season in the afterglow of epiphany, so still reflecting upon the gospel readings that we've heard since Advent throughout the Christmas

season of the Holy Family, but especially the Magi, only mentioned by Matthew, and so in the light of epiphany, why don't we consider what Matthew is also doing in his opening chapter with regard to the

vietic genealogy on the one hand and then the enunciation to St Joseph on the other with the

accent mark on St Joseph. Nice. Yeah so what I'd like to do is sort of

covering familiar ground for many of us, but at the same time I want to do it in a way that might bring up some new insights.

So the genealogy, it's one of those tedious readings

that you feel bad for the deacon or the priest

who has to get through all of these names

that are so hard to pronounce.

Besides, I mean, you have 42 generations covered by Matthew in the first

half of chapter one beginning with Abraham going through David all the way to the

exile and up to Joseph and Mary and Jesus.

So looking at it you can sense that this is deliberate because you have the arrangement

in terms of three sets of 14 generations.

So the first set has 14 generations going from Abraham to David.
