Hopes were high when negotiators gathered in Cairo for a potential ceasefire this weekend.

After all, the war in Gaza has claimed the lives now of more than 34,000 people, according to the Hamas-backed health authorities there.

And while some newly opened crossings were helping to get food into Gaza, it's still not

enough for what's becoming a potential famine there.

Well, then yesterday, negotiators packed their bags and left town without a deal and what we've seen

since hasn't made anyone more optimistic.

ABC's foreign correspondent Tom Sufi Bird starts us off from Tel Aviv this morning.

Tom, what can you tell us about these negotiations?

Because I mean, is there one thing that's keeping them from reaching a deal over Gaza?
