Hey everybody, it's Mariel. I'm going to start this episode with a joke that was

told to me by Life Kit reporter Andy Taggle. She heard it from somebody else.

Time flies like the wind.

Fruit flies like bananas. like the I mean it's not like an infestation but they are lurking in my kitchen. I

kill one and I think the problem is over and then more spring up. You know the

deal. It's the summer. Fresh fruit is ripening on my counter. I haven't

know what to do about it. So we called in the big guns.

Yeah, unfortunately I've become sort of an expert at killing the thing that I work with.

Lori Stevenson is an associate professor of biology at Auburn University.

She works with fruit flies in her research, rears them, dissex them, studies them.

She says this is a common problem, especially during the summer, and when fruit flies pop up, it's easy to feel like,

man, my house is gross.

I think everybody struggles with this.

I mean, I think maybe some people feel ashamed

like it means that their house is not clean.

I would absolutely say that's not true.
