Summary

Thom Hartmann is the #1 progressive talk radio show host in the country. Today, he joins Current Affairs editor in chief Nathan J. Robinson to discuss the world of talk radio, as well as his book "The Hidden History of Monopolies: How Big Business Destroyed The American Dream." Nathan asks why the right has been so dominant in talk radio, and how leftists can effectively counter them. We talk about: - Why Rush Limbaugh was so good at what he did - Whether there is anything about talk radio as a medium that is inherently favorable to conservatives - How giant radio corporations limit the reach of progressive voices (including the billionaire station owner who once told Thom "I won't put anyone on the air who wants to raise my taxes") - What it takes to hold people's attention for 3 hours straight on the air - How to do a professional "radio voice" - How the left can produce successful radio (and why we need to) Thom's book on big business is here: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/49195416-the-hidden-history-of-monopolies Thom's Nation article about why the left should enter the talk radio field is here: https://www.thenation.com/article/society/conservative-talk-radio/

Good evening, current affairs listeners. My name is Nathan Robinson. I am the editor-in-chief

0:14.5

of Kurt Affairs Magazine, and I am here tonight with Tom Hartman. He is the number one

0:19.3

progressive talk radio host in the country.

0:22.7

He has managed to succeed in a field that is traditionally heavily dominated by the right,

0:27.9

and that is something I want to talk about with him tonight. He has written over 30 books,

0:32.9

and his recent book series is the Hidden History Series, the hidden history of guns on the Second

0:39.0

Amendment, the hidden history of the Supreme Court and the betrayal of America, the

0:42.7

history of the war and voting, hidden history of the of monopolies, how big business

0:46.7

destroyed the American dream, which we're going to discuss tonight, and most recently the

0:50.4

hidden history of American healthcare, why sickness bankrupts you and makes others

0:55.2

insanely rich. Tom Hartman, it's so nice to talk to you, such an honor. Well, thank you. It's a

1:00.2

pleasure being here. Okay, so I want to talk about talk radio because I've always wanted to ask

1:05.2

you why talk radio is so right wing, why the right has so managed to dominate this particular medium, that is your own medium.

1:16.6

And I guess there are two parts to this, right?

1:19.4

So there's the part that is the kind of political economy part about the companies that own radio stations around the country, and that sort of relates to

1:29.3

the stuff from the Monopoly's book. But then there's also the question of the craft of talk

1:36.0

radio and why conservatives seem to have perfected the craft of talk radio. So before we get to the question of the economic structure of the radio industry, I do

1:50.0

want to start with talk radio as a medium and why it is that all these people, Limbaugh,

1:55.3

Hannity, Michael Savage, Michael Medved, Glenn Beck, why have they all managed to conquer

2:00.7

this particular form of communication?

2:04.4

It is a relatively unique medium that has its essentially own rules.

2:10.8

And if you understand those rules, then you can be successful in that medium.
