Hey guys, what's going on with this loss of sense of smell in COVID?

A lot of patients from the beginning have reported that they lose their sense of smell.

Sometimes they're sensitive taste.

There's their ability to detect spicy food, which is called chemist thesis.

All those have slightly different mechanisms.

I think what I want to do today is review the understanding so far on the science of this,

because every day we learn something new about this virus.

By understanding it, we get a better sense of how the virus works and also what it means

if you lose your sense of smell because so many people are getting infected and so many

people are having this symptom.

This is how we think it works.

notes.

It turns out, from early on in this pandemic, people were reporting that a sense of sudden

loss of smell was really common in patients who ultimately showed themselves to be infected

with the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

It's sudden.

It's not like you slowly notice your sense of smell is changing.

It's like all of a sudden patients will say, I just couldn't smell.
