Summary

In 1986, 20-year-old Mike Tyson became the youngest Heavyweight Champion ever, kicking off four years of utter dominance that made him one of the biggest icons in sports. But by the time he officially retired in 2005, it was hard to imagine ever seeing him in a ring again. So news that, in 2024, he would fight a 27-year-old Jake Paul in an officially sanctioned fight caught everyone by surprise.  Today, Andreas Hale joins David Dennis Jr. to explain why Mike Tyson remains a fixture of sports culture and explores whether or not Friday’s bout versus Jake Paul is actually a good idea.  Learn more about your ad choices. Andreas, I have an important question for you.

0:04.1

Who is worse at retirements?

0:07.1

Wrestlers or boxers?

0:09.6

Wrestlers.

0:10.4

Wrestlers always be the worst at retirements because they lived in delusion to begin with.

0:15.8

And the idea that it's over isn't real.

0:20.0

Thank you, Rick Flair. This is your fault, right? Thank you,

0:23.4

0:36.7

In terms of the man of the hour, Mike Tyson,

0:41.0

how many times have you watched these post-retirement novelty fights from Iron Mike?

0:47.4

I didn't watch a lot, man.

0:48.6

When Mike retired, when he lost his last fight to Kevin McBride,

0:51.3

which was a sad day in sports in general, right?

0:53.8

You just watched

0:54.4

Mike, this beast of a man just laying on the canvas looking up like, I'm cooked. For him to do an

1:00.6

exhibition fight, I know he fought Corey Sanders. I refused to watch it. I grew up watching Mike

1:04.4

Tyson. There was no way I was going to watch a shell of a man fighting for money, which is funny

1:09.8

because what we're about to talk about is a man fighting

1:13.0

for money. But this is a whole different version of Mike Tyson. So I refuse to get involved with

1:17.7

those exhibitions because I knew where it was at mentally wasn't a great place. But now I think we're

1:23.9

seeing a version of Mike Tyson who was actually happy, which I never thought I'd see in 1994.
