| 0:47.3 | Hello, I'm William Dunn and I'm 8. My question is, how and why do we burp? |
| 0:52.0 | Burping is your body doing pressure control for your stomach really. You see when |
| 0:59.2 | you eat as well as chomping away, you swallow loads of air when you eat food because it's in your |
| 1:05.5 | mouth so you kind of swallow it down. Also you get gas in your stomach from fizzy drinks, all those bubbles that you wolf down, |
| 1:14.4 | they're bubbling in away, loads of carbon dioxide, stuff like that. You get air in your stomach from |
| 1:19.7 | eating fast, chewing gum, talking while you're eating, and all of that gas, it builds at the top of your stomach and your body |
| 1:30.3 | doesn't really like the pressure there so it opens a little valve at the top of your belly it's like |
| 1:36.9 | the muscle between your stomach and your throat and it just let some out almost like you were letting |
| 1:43.2 | out a bit of air from an overinflated tire on your bike or a car, something like that. |
| 1:48.1 | Well, the gas from there rises out of your mouth and that's a burp. |
| 1:52.4 | And as it rushes through your throat, it vibrates the tissues there, like air swishing through a trumpet. |
| 1:59.6 | It rattles around and it makes a sound. |
| 2:01.9 | That's why you burp. |
| 2:05.0 | That's why it's noisy, William. |
| 2:07.3 | Thank you for the question. |
| 2:09.6 | Here's one from Sam who wants to know why do cats land on their feet. |
| 2:15.7 | Well, they don't always land on their feet. |
| 2:35.7 | But they do a lot of the time because of something called the writing reflex inside their ear. In fact, inside our ear too, they've got a little sensor which helps keep them balanced. And for a cat, they're really good at reacting to it because they're quite light, because they're supple. |
