Summary

We’ve heard the word “empowerment" used and abused time and time again. Often, we hear it when we’re being sold something: almost everything from beauty products to exercise classes are meant to “empower women.” But what does “empowerment” even really look like? And feel like? Today I talk about my personal journey with the word, cite Jia Tolentino’s incredible essay “Always Be Optimizing” and Naomi Wolfe’s Beauty Myth to examine how capitalism has diluted true female liberation. Hello and welcome to another episode of High Low with Emrata. This is the solo episode

0:21.0

that comes out on Thursdays where I pose a question and we investigate it. Today we're

0:27.3

asking the question, why do I hate the word empowerment? I went on Eileen's podcast and touched

0:34.8

on it and I felt like I listened back to that part of the clip and I felt like I really want to

0:40.2

explain this a little bit more why I prefer the word control over empowerment, why I feel that

0:47.4

empowerment, the term empowerment, has become this word that really is just meant to sell women

0:55.5

products and a feeling and get to the bottom of that and why my reaction to that is to that word

1:03.7

is discussed because of how much my own politics have evolved and I think that I have a little bit

1:10.6

of shame around the way that I used to throw that word around and to talk about the way the marketplace

1:18.4

has taken the term empowerment and used it as a way to sell women and idea and products. That

1:26.9

is actually ultimately quite oppressive and is very disempowering in fact. This is a topic that

1:37.8

I have thought a lot about. It's a big part of the introduction of my book. You may have seen me

1:45.2

choking about it on Z-Way show and something about empowerment came up and I said to her jokingly

1:55.4

because I do think white women in particular really embrace the term empowerment or have

2:01.5

embrace the term empowerment. Everything is fucking empowering. I was like I don't even know what

2:06.0

empowerment even means empowering and then I told her which is the truth by the way when I was

2:12.2

writing the book I googled what empowerment was which I did again for this podcast and was shocked to

2:19.8

find that it's basically a feeling that women get is the definition. I mean not literally the first

2:26.2

definition of empowerment is authority or power given to someone to do something and then the

2:31.4

second is the process of becoming stronger and more confident especially in controlling one's

2:36.9

life and claiming one's rights and then there's a quote political structure for the empowerment of

2:42.0

women. I found this really funny. I googled empowerment and one of the first things that came up
