Summary

Ever looked around during worship and wondered why everyone suddenly has their hands in the air? Kaitlyn and producer Mike explore where this practice comes from, what the Bible actually says about worship, and why different churches express worship in such different ways. They also unpack the tension between emotional worship and thoughtful faith, and ask an important question: What if God cares more about the condition of your heart than the placement of your hands?

Mike, how are you?

0:25.2

Caitlin, I'm feeling stretched out today.

0:27.5

Stretched out.

0:28.7

Yeah.

0:29.4

I didn't.

0:30.3

Is that good or bad?

0:31.5

I was trying to think, does that mean I did my exercises or I didn't?

0:35.3

Yeah.

0:35.4

Or, yeah, are you stretched thin like you're stressed or are you like feeling stretched out like you feel good in your body? I have found sometimes when you try to do wordplay with an academic, it doesn't go well because the academic really wants to get. Precision. Yes, to the exact definition and nuance of the word. There wasn't that much thought put into this, Caitlin. Stretched out. But you know what? I think there was a lot of thought put into our kid question

for today. So let's go ahead and listen. Why do we put our hands up when we worship God?

1:05.9

Why do we put our hands up when we worship God? This is such a good question. You know this, Mike. I love, I love all kid questions, but I really love kid questions about church. And I love kid questions when they're just like, I'm in church, something's happening that seems weird to me. Why do we do it? Because there's lots of things we do in church that as we grow up are just so normal to us

1:28.8

that we just kind of go like, oh, of course we do this. Of course it looks this way. Of course the pastor acts this way. Whatever. And sometimes it takes a little kid being like, wait, why do we do that? This is weird. And if you've never been, even if you're an adult, if you've never been in a certain kind of church, not just any church, but like a certain kind of church, you might go in and be like,

1:46.7

what are we doing? Where are our, why are our hands up? What are they pointing towards? Are they grasping for something? Like, what's going on with the hands? Yeah. This does remind me, when I went to Wheaton, we had assigned chapel seats. Oh, yeah. And so they would always change up, though, how they assigned it.

2:01.1

Like they've done it alphabetically by your hometown or by your assigned chapel seats. Oh, yeah. And so they would always change up, though, how they assigned it.

2:05.5

Like they've done it alphabetically by your hometown or by your state. But one year they did it by church denomination.

2:08.6

And it was just really funny that you knew where the Pentecostals were that year.
