By the time Emily got a job at the old Victorian house during her junior year of high school,

she already knew the stories.

Everyone in town did.

The house sat on a hill overlooking a row of older neighborhoods and had been there longer than

most people could remember.

It wasn't the largest building in town, but it was easily the most recognizable.

Tourists stopped to take pictures of it. Local history groups

occasionally featured it in calendars and fundraising events. Every Halloween, somebody inevitably

brought up the rumors that the place was haunted. Most people treated those stories the way

small towns treat all old legends. Nobody entirely believed them, but nobody entirely

dismissed them either. The house had changed purposes several times over the years. At one point,

it had been a private residence. Later, it served as a boarding house. By the time Emily started working

there, it had been converted into a bed and breakfast and day spa that catered mostly to weekend visitors looking for a quiet getaway.

It was beautiful. It was also unsettling. The owners had gone out of their way to preserve the building's original character.

Antique furniture filled the hallways. Old photographs hung on the walls. Display cabinets

contained objects that had belonged to former residents and owners. Some guests loved the atmosphere.

Emily wasn't one of them. There were certain items she avoided whenever possible. An antique doll with

faded glass eyes sat in a second floor display case.
