Summary

When Catholics call Mary their mother, it may seem like they are taking away some of the respect due to Jesus and giving it to Mary. This is far from the case. Fr. Mike points out two reasons why calling Mary our mother can improve our relationship with Christ, and strengthen our faith life.

Loving the people Jesus loves helps you love him more. The more you love Mary the more you love God.
Jesus gave Mary to us as our Mother on the Cross.

“When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son!’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother!’ And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home” (John 19:26-27).

0:08.1	So when it comes to Mary, like Mary the Mother of God, a lot of times Catholics are asked
0:13.4	the question like, why do you talk to Mary when you could talk to Jesus?
0:16.7	Like why go to a human being when you could go to God himself?
0:21.6	And that is a great question.
0:22.6	In fact, one of the fears people have is that if you have a relationship with Mary that
0:32.4	would take away from your relationship with God himself, take away from your relationship

0:38.7	Because here's what we believe.
0:40.2	Jesus is fully God, fully human, right?
0:42.6	The God is God.
0:44.0	Mary's not God.
0:45.0	She's not even partly God.
0:46.2	She's not even like a smidge God.
0:48.0	She's completely human being.
0:50.5	We would call Mary the perfect disciple, but we also call Mary something other than that.
0:55.1	She's the perfect disciple.
0:56.1	She's the mother of God, but there's something even more.
0:59.5	Something even more.
1:00.5	And so when it comes to having a relationship with her, like, why would you want that?
