Summary

This week, and as we are at the very beginning of the new year, I'm tackling the subject of anxiety and change. I've covered this subject before but this time I am joined by Dr Harry Barry, author of Embracing Change, and one of my most listened to guests on the podcast thus far (he was on a previous episode where we unpacked anxiety at a more basic level). The change that requires you to take action and the change that comes at us out of the blue; we cover both. Also in this episode we go off on a helpful tangent, talking about our (mostly MY) need to be in control. What's happening in my mind when I get anxious when I can't control things exactly how I want to? And what can I do about it? Read Dr Harry Barry's latest book here.

very, very early on in the new year in, what year is it? 2022. I don't even know anymore. I feel like I've

0:38.2

just missed a couple of years there. But this is a time of year where people are maybe considering

0:41.9

a change, a change in their life, a change in their job. Lots of different changes can happen. But

0:46.4

change is a massive source of anxiety for a lot of my listeners, myself included. So I'm joined here by Dr. Harry Barry, who I had on before. He's back. He's got another book

0:54.8

out now. He's got about 15,000 books. They're all worth listening to. This one is called

0:59.9

Embracing Change. I'll pop a link in the podcast notes. And we talk about how to handle the anxiety

1:05.5

of two different kinds of change. So the change that requires you to take some action, such as will I leave this

1:11.1

job and go for a new one? Will I break up with this person that I don't know I should be with anymore?

1:15.3

And then the change such as a pandemic, which seems to hit us like a freight train and come out of

1:19.5

the blue. We also talk in great detail about our need, particularly my need for control and how

1:24.8

a lot of my anxiety stems from this need to be in control. He does a

1:28.0

little bit of a therapy session with me towards the end as well. So hopefully you will relate to that,

1:32.8

especially if you're a new parent and I hope you find it as helpful as I did. Thank you as always.

I get a lot of messages from people saying certain episodes have resonated

with them. I've probably gotten the most messages about our episode that we did around managing

anxiety. So I want to start by just thanking you for that and all of the wisdom you shared with
