You might be able to hear the remnants of illness

in my voice right now.

I spent the whole weekend at all of Monday in my bedroom,

coughing and sneezing and complaining

and petting my dog in an escape of fashion.

Mostly, I'd do it on my computer and watch TV,

keeping hazy taps in the situation in Charlottesville

as it went from a dispearating, right-wing protest

to a melee, to a fatal tragedy, to a national crisis

in which the president couldn't bring himself

to blame his supporters for what had happened.

The whole time, I felt really far

and disconnected from everything that was happening.

Not just because I was too sick to help my colleagues

at Slate with coverage, not just because I had deleted

my Twitter account a few weeks earlier

and a bid to regain some control over my own brain.
