Apple and Facebook are classic Silicon Valley frenemies.

They both beat each other to succeed, but they fight a lot too, and recently their fight

has gotten more public and more heated, and you may see some of it spill over into the

phone you're properly holding right now.

Before we get into this current feud, can we just talk about sort of how Apple and Facebook

do and don't get along?

Let's talk about the getting along part.

Why do they both need each other?

Okay.

Well, Facebook obviously makes apps like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and it also has

something called an audience network, and basically all these things.

They put trackers in your apps, also websites, and they collect data across all of those

apps and websites to build a comprehensive profile of you, which it then uses the target

ads.

That's basically Facebook's business model, and a major source of their income.

Apple, on the other hand, they're goods and services.

They're not an advertising company, but part of their appeal is the apps that you get

on your phone, including Facebook.
