Summary

Today's episode is an amazing fireside chat I did at AdWeek with Greg Hahn and David Greiner! We discuss how we build diverse teams at Vaynermedia and the importance of that, holding myself accountable for everything that happens in the agency, my journey to first starting Vaynermedia, making things people want to consume versus making what we want to make, why business is genuinely fun to me and much more!

Enjoy! Let me know what you thought.

This is the Gary V. Audio Experience.

0:05.0

I'm going to start with the first question. Gary asked me not to tell him anything we were going to ask yesterday,

0:11.0

which is especially going to make this fun.

0:15.0

My first question is for Greg Hon.

0:18.0

Why is Gary Vaynerchuk so popular?

0:21.0

I started with an easy one. Gary is a one-man content machine. Even when the cameras aren't rolling, they should be,

0:32.0

because everything that comes out is now the slow-moving interest thing, and like, cordable, you know, turn them on and watch them run.

0:42.0

And this one is for you, Gary. Why is Greg Hon such a great creative leader?

0:48.0

When I came into this industry, I knew nothing, literally nothing. I didn't even know that medium creative was separate.

0:56.0

When I started this company, and so for me, when I got in, I found it fascinating about how much passion it was about the work, the creative.

1:09.0

And there would be names that would be thrown around, and I would go to Google and try to figure out who are these characters.

1:17.0

And most of them, when I would Google, just didn't really look very interesting.

1:23.0

And so when I Googled Greg, I'm like, oh, that looks like a fucking rock star, actually.

1:29.0

Not like the way people like, that's a rock star, like they're good at their job.

1:32.0

And I was like, you know, that was interesting to me. And then as we were building the agency, I would interview quite a bit,

1:39.0

and always found it fascinating of the people that others would reference, that they were inspired by, or were interested by.

1:48.0

And, you know, at the end of the day, I'm always most fascinated by, especially this is going to land with everybody.

1:56.0

In the world we live in today, I was always curious about this, even a decade ago.

2:00.0

But more than ever, I'm always interested about what people think about people that actually spent a lot of time with those individuals.

2:07.0

And so the spark that would come out of a creative that had worked undergrading it, that when I was going through interviewing through the last decade,

2:19.0

always caught my attention of like, there's a real creative connection between the people that have worked for him and with him.

2:26.0

And I always found that fascinating.
