Summary

When we hear the word disciple, we usually think of those who followed Jesus when He walked the earth. However, all faithful followers of Christ across time and space are His disciples and are called to disciple others. But what makes a true disciple? For, we know that not everyone who calls Jesus Lord will enter the Kingdom of heaven (see Matthew 7:21). In his four-part series Whose Disciple?, Dr. Michael Youssef dives into Scripture to uncover what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus and how true disciples can carry out Christ’s Great Commission.

0:18.2	Now turn with me to the Word of God, Matthew 28, verses 19 and 20.
0:23.6	Now the word disciple in Greek, Matthewo, actually, carries a marvelous combination of meanings.
0:31.6	It means placing your whole trust in the master, Jesus.
0:36.6	It means wholeheartedly following Jesus.
0:40.3	But here it comes, this is really the most important part. It means a life of continuously
0:48.3	imitating Jesus, imitating Jesus, and obeying Jesus. There's so many people say, I'm a follower of Jesus,
0:57.8	but they never reflect or imitate Jesus' love, Jesus is mercy, Jesus is grace, and Jesus is forgiveness.
1:07.5	And that is why Jesus in the Gospel of John, chapter 8, verse 31, he said, if you abide
1:13.6	in my word and only if you abide in my word, then and only then you can be called my disciples.
1:23.6	There are some people who teach that you come to Jesus and you receive him as your Savior.
1:33.5	That's called hell insurance policy.
1:37.3	Then sometime, somewhere down the road, you receive him as Lord. And then sometime, somewhere down the road, you receive him as Lord. And then sometime, somewhere down the road, you become a disciple.
1:50.1	Now, beloved, listen to me, that is not biblical. That is not biblical. When a person genuinely
1:56.8	confesses Christ to be his or her only Savior and Lord. Immediately, that person receives the Holy Spirit,
2:08.1	because it's the Holy Spirit that opened their eyes anyway. They immediately become disciples.
2:14.7	Now, to be sure, they may not have all the biblical knowledge, they don't have all the biblical
2:19.5	training, they're not even aware of some biblical issues, but they must become disciples.
2:26.1	Nonetheless, it's a start of the journey.
