that shielded it from the highway. Generations of families had sent their children there,

and the place carried that quiet sense of familiarity that only comes from decades of routine.

After a few years, the building itself began to feel predictable.

Students recognized not only the teachers and coaches, but the office staff, the lunchroom workers, and the maintenance crew who kept the place running.

There were only a handful of custodians responsible for the entire campus, and most students
