New rules to prevent bank failures.

Remember those regional bank failures earlier this year?

Well, federal regulators should do.

The federal deposit insurance corporation will consider new rules this morning aimed at making

mid-size banks more stable and quickly dissolving those that get into financial trouble to avoid

contagion.

That was the whole worry this spring that failing regional banks could disrupt the

system as a whole.

So, how would these proposed rules change the way regional banks do business?

Well, the idea is to fortify the banking system and make it more resilient in case mid-size

banks get into trouble.

And we're talking about banks that have more than $100 billion in assets.

The proposed rules would make changes like requiring the banks to hold more capital and

to make a more robust emergency plan in case they need to be unwound.

And some of these requirements sound really basic, like maintaining the information necessary

to keep operating in case the banks have to be taken over.

Yeah, that is pretty basic.
