nothing to do with it. Davis would never do a thing like that. And really, what would it gain the South after the fact?

Once the Confederacy was dissolved, I mean, such a mean-spirited and counterproductive

act as assassinating the sitting president could only bring all kinds of ban things down on the South's head, and it did

anyway. And that was another reason why Lincoln was to be removed because he was much too

conciliatory toward the South. There were many up in the North that wanted to punish the

South until they were barely recognizable, hence the Reconstruction Act.
