Summary

Miami hosts Bethune-Cookman this week. Andrew Ivins and David Lake share some thoughts on who the Hurricanes need to get on the field against the inferior FCS opponent in order to build depth. The two also discuss the idea of potentially redshirting senior linebacker Zach McCloud before giving their takes on whether or not the new recruiting rules that Manny Diaz hinted at during his press conference will work in South Florida. What's up everybody. Welcome back to Through the Smoke, a Miami Hurricanes podcast here on the 24-7 Sports Network. I'm Andrew Ivins, joined as always by David Lake.

0:24.0

Week three is here. Your Miami Hurricanes will play their first game of the season at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday.

0:31.0

And it's coming against Spathoon Cookman. David, we normally like to kind of preview and break down a bunch of the opposing team.

0:39.3

But since it's Bethune Cookman, I don't really think most listeners are going to care that

0:43.1

much. So I thought we kind of change it up this week for the podcast or at least the pre,

0:49.4

I guess, preview podcast. And I wanted to highlight a story you wrote, I think it was either on Monday or Tuesday,

0:56.4

10 players that Miami needs to get on the field this week, if they're going to build some depth.

1:02.1

And I think it's really, you could toss that central Michigan game in there as well. So I guess

1:06.5

kind of why did you write this and what are your thoughts heading into these next two games? I mean,

1:11.5

obviously Miami's going to be favored by a lot. A lot of people are expecting wins. So is this really

1:16.3

about just playing the young guys? I think so. I mean, obviously, you know, Miami has to handle the

1:22.6

game in order to do that. And the sooner they do that, the better, to be honest, because that means

1:28.1

more snaps for these younger guys. But I kind of wrote that just because, you know, Miami started

1:34.1

the season with two power five opponents. And for the most part, the playing rotation was kept

1:39.9

tight, which I agree with. I mean, the coaches need to play who they trust in those two,

1:44.7

two games. And, you know, it's not a time necessarily to throw inexperienced guys out there

1:51.1

and get their feet wet. But these next two weeks are that kind of time to do that. And it's important

1:57.0

to develop depth for the upcoming ACC run that follows Bethune and Central Michigan.

2:04.4

So, you know, I think me, what I'm looking at specifically, to be honest, is developing more

2:13.4

defensive line depth. I do think it's a strength of the team. And I do think they've kept things really tight on the defensive line depth. I do think it's a strength of the team.

2:18.5

And I do think they've kept things really tight on the defensive line with snaps

2:23.1

through these first two weeks.
