Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me, Simon Calder.

0:07.1

It's Tuesday the 20th of January.

0:10.7

And a report out today makes very interesting reading for anybody who is concerned about UK tourism,

0:18.6

as I think we all should be.

0:23.1

It's called the economic value of tourism in the United Kingdom and it was conducted by Visit Britain, Visit England and Oxford Economics.

0:30.7

And I'm delighted to be talking to the chief executive of Visit Britain, Patricia Yates.

0:36.8

What's the headlines?

0:38.6

community wouldn't necessarily be able to support on their own. And that ranges from cafes in

1:42.0

the wilds of Shetland to theatres in the West End of London.

1:46.1

The challenge that we have for Britain is that this is a competitive world. We can see that we're

1:53.6

losing market share to Western Europe, but the prospects there are really good. We have great assets

1:59.8

and we have an industry that wants to go out

2:03.3

and compete. And we visit Britain are obviously aiding that with our starring Great Britain

2:08.8

campaign and working with government to make sure that government policy underpins that growth.

2:14.7

Government policy is doing all from my point point of view, that it possibly can
