The president is not our teacher, our tutor, our guide, or ruler. He does not command us, we command him.

We serve neither him nor his vision. It is not his job or his prerogative to redefine custom law and beliefs,

to appropriate industries, to seize the country, as it were, by the shoulders, so as to impose

by force of theatrical charisma his justice on 300 million others.

It is neither his job nor his prerogative to shift the power of decision away from the people to the acolytes of his choosing.

That is then-congressman Mike Pence in 2010, talking about the American presidency,

taking thinly veiled jabs at then-president Barack Obama in a speech at Hillsdale College,

a Christian institution based on classic American conservatism,

funded by hundreds of thousands of dollars of money

from big conservative donors, like the Cokes. Those are all values Pence shares or says

he shares. He's a Christian. He's a conservative. He's received significant support from the coax."

Pence continued his speech.

Power is an instrument of fatal consequence.

It is confined no more readily than Quicksilver and escapes good intentions as easily as air flows through mesh.

Therefore, those who are entrusted with it must educate themselves in self-restraint.

Now, here's Pence in 2016, after being announced as Donald Trump's running mate.

You know, I come to this moment deeply humbled, but with a grateful heart.

Grateful to God for his amazing grace.
