In keeping with President Reagan's legacy, I do not ask about a nominee's personal opinions.

What matters is not a judge's political views, but whether they can set aside those views

to do what the law and the Constitution require.

I am pleased to say that I have found without doubt such a person.

Tonight it is my honor and privilege to announce that I will nominate Judge Brett Kappenaw

to the United States Supreme Court.

I've spent my career in public service from the executive branch and the White House to

the U.S. Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit.

I have served with 17 other judges, each of them, a colleague and a friend.

My judicial philosophy is straightforward.

A judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law.

A judge must interpret statutes as written and a judge must interpret the Constitution

as written, informed by history and tradition and precedent.

That was the President making his big announcement about Judge Kappenaw as his nominee to replace

Anthony Kennedy on the United States Supreme Court.

I don't know whether I start with the insanity of the left.

And let me also start by saying it didn't matter who Donald Trump chose.

The same comments, the same lies, the same hysteria, the same politics.
