It's the 1980s. A woman from Oklahoma, a lawyer, a mother of two, and a Republican, is traveling across the country with a photocopier.

Because it's the 80s and photocopiers were scarce, so she brought her own.

She was working on a big study examining bankruptcy.

Who files for it and how it happens and why?

This was right after a law passed that made it way easier to file for bankruptcy.

She, an economic conservative, had set out to prove one thing.

Here's what that woman from Oklahoma said in an interview at UC Berkeley.

I sent out to prove they were all a bunch of cheaters.

My take on this, my thrust, what I was going to do is I was going to expose these people who were taking

advantage of the rest of us by hauling off to bankruptcy and discharging debts that they

really could repay or who'd been irresponsible in running up debts.
