Summary

On the third episode of the Family Discipleship Podcast the hosts (Adam Griffin, Cassie Bryant, and Chelsea Griffin) talk about who and what gets to influence our kids. Questions for Christian parents that we answered in this episode:
  • How do you decide who or what gets to influence your kids?
  • What does determining influences have to do with leading your home spiritually?
  • What are some of the cultural narratives that don’t line up with what we believe that we try to help our kids navigate or protect our kids from?
  • How do you think about or advise parents to make decisions about preparing their kids to be exposed to other worldviews or to escape from them?
  • How do you help kids think through the things they’ll see and hear?
  • What should our practice be around smart phones? Not just whether our kids get them, but how they see us use them in their presence.
  • How do we prepare our kids to be countercultural?
  • How do you think through friendships for your kids?
  • How do we make content decisions for our kids?
  • How do we develop a family where we, the parents, are the safest people to ask about things they are hearing or seeing?
  • Where does God give us guidance in this area regarding influences?

0:59.4

Well, good. Well, before we kick off this episode about influences, I thought it might be a good question to get it started with.

1:07.1

If you could be any TV mom, who would you be? Cassie Bryant, if you could be any TV mom, who would you want to be?

1:12.7

I'd be my hero from Golden Girls. Sophia, the mom, like, really old lady.

1:18.2

Sophia from Golden Girls. I feel like she's living her best life. Yeah, she's the best.

1:23.7

She is the best. She's definitely an Enneagram 8, and she's living with her favorite daughter,

2:18.4

who's a grown woman and all of her girlfriends. And she's a lot of fun. She's so much fun. So you have one favorite daughter and you want to live with that one of them for the rest of your life? Is that kind of the idea? All three of my daughters are my favorite. If any one of them would have me live with them and their girlfriends while in their like 70s and I'm 95. I don't really turn that on you though. Yeah, he did. He really wanted me to throw one of, do my, yeah. Just throwing down the parent bear trap for later. Chelsea, how about you? Oh, let's hear Chelsea's. It's going to be way better. Oh, I think this is an obvious choice. I think I would love to be Roseanne Barr. She's awesome. She's telling it like it is. Did she get canceled? Well, like my culture. I'm not like Roseanne in the 90s. I still wasn't. I wasn't allowed to watch Roseanne in the 90s. Well, that's what I was going to say. Instead of having to worry about the content in your kids' lives,

2:22.2

you are the content that people have to worry about. It just makes things simple.

2:29.7

That's so ridiculous. I'm not shocked at all. I feel not shocked at all. I feel very shocked.

2:36.5

I feel very shocked. I feel odd. Well, since you girls care so much about mine, let me give you my answer real quick.

2:40.8

If I were a TV dad, I have actually put a lot of thought to this since I wrote the question.

2:46.6

But you know who my favorite television movie dad is Dan in Real Life is Steve Carell from Dan in Real Life?

2:53.1

I think that he's like the sweetest guy and he's got some hard kids to deal with and a difficult situation.
