The World Health Organization has declared the highly infectious disease

Empox a global health emergency. The virus, formerly known as Monkey Pox, has

spread rapidly in the Democratic Republic of Congo and now across Central and Eastern Africa.

Empox can cause fever and a distinctive rash that spreads over the body.

Most people fully recover, but some get very sick and die.

The WHO Chief Tedros Adonom Gabriasis, made the

empox announcement at the organization's headquarters in Geneva.

Last week I announced that I was convening an emergency committee under the international health regulations

to evaluate the abscess of the empokes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other countries in Africa. Today the Emergency Committee

met and advised me that in its view the situation constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.
