And he writes to this particular issue.

The idea that the Old Testament Hebrew Bible God is the vengeful God and the New Testament God is the merciful God seems evident after a cursory glance.

But the reality is that it's not so clear cut. And that over simplification has been used by Christian antisemites to speak ill of Judaism and to argue that Christianity is superior.

Now that's opening up a door that I never, I never even thought of that. The reality is is that there's plenty of love from God and the Hebrew scriptures.

God's main quality is identified as Hesse, which is translated variously as loving kindness, mercy, steadfast love or covenant love.

In fact, during the Exodus, God doesn't flick punishment on the Egyptians, but selects Israel for deliverance for no particular reason other than honoring a promise made to Abraham also for no particular reason.
