Welcome back to the next picture show, a movie the week podcast devoted to a classic film

in the way it shaped our thoughts on a recent release. I'm Scott Tobias here again with

USA, Barbara Cople's Oscar-winning documentary about a minor strike in Appalachia. This episode, we're jumping ahead to the present day to see how working conditions and

labor relations have changed in the Netflix documentary American Factory.

The decline of blue-collar manufacturing jobs in the Midwest has been the subject of stump

speeches and documentaries for a long time, including Roger and Me, which we recently

revisited in this podcast.

And like Roger and Me, the inciting incident in American Factory is the closing of a GM

plant and an industrial hub, costing thousands of workers their jobs.

This particular plant is located in Keith Phipps' hometown of Dayton, Ohio, and there's

hope for revitalization

when a Chinese glass company called Fou Yao takes over the plant and hires many former GM
