Summary

Dave Rubin of The Rubin Report talks to Douglas Murray (Author & Journalist) about Dave’s coming out story in the first chapter of “Don’t Burn This Book”. Dave compares his coming out as gay to coming out of the “political closet” when he started being very critical of the identity politics of liberals and progressives. While friends and family were supportive of his being gay, he received a more hostile reaction to his political views. Dave also discusses the damage that living a double life can do to your mental health and how it makes you more apt to lie in other parts of your life. Learn more about your ad choices. Hello, I'm Douglas Murray and welcome to the Don't Burn This Book Book Club.

1:01.2

I am here today talking with Dave about chapter one of Don't Burn This Book, which is on coming out.

1:12.2

And I suppose first of all, I should ask you or first of all congratulations on the book.

1:17.2

Second, there are two coming out you mentioned in this chapter.

1:23.2

Maybe we could talk a little about the first because I was very struck by every gay man has a coming out story, every gay woman has a coming out story.

1:33.2

But you know, it's a reminder of how torturous, difficult and in some cases delayed the process of discovering who you are can actually be.

1:44.2

It's interesting because you know, it's one of those things. It's like like you I talk for a living, everyone knows what I think about everything, but it is a part of my life that I don't talk about that often.

1:55.2

And I liken being closeted about my sexuality to what I think many, many people right now are suffering from, which is being closeted about their political views.

2:04.2

And I don't mean that in the context of some really racist political view or even fringe political view.

2:10.2

I mean, people that have views that 10 years ago were very moderate and decent now are just simply afraid to say what they think.

2:17.2

So in terms of my sexuality and coming out, I mean, it's a true story that I mentioned in there that the first person that I ever came out to was a friend of mine who is a standup comic, who was a, he was openly gay comic.

2:28.2

I hate the phrase openly gay, but he was openly gay comic named Mike Singer in New York City. And I was 25 years old.

2:34.2

So I mean, that's late, especially, you know, I think for young people now, when they hear, oh, you didn't come out till 25, that sounds crazy to them because they're out at like 12 or at least talking about it as if it's not a bad thing, something like that.

2:47.2

But the first person I came out to was it was September 11, 2001 at about 12 30 AM in the Times Square subway station.
