Summary

The Consumer Price Index for March is going to generate a lot of headlines when it’s released on Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. ET. That’s still the No. 1 issue confronting policymakers and investors, and, given the constraints on energy and agricultural commodities exacerbated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, that’s likely to be the case for some time. Will the Federal Reserve tighten policy to the point of economic recession? Matt Peron, Director of Research at Janus Henderson Investors, joins Real Vision’s Maggie Lake for today’s Daily Briefing to talk about where we are in the market cycle, inflation, and the merits of dividends. At the top of the show, Ash Bennington shares an update on cryptocurrency markets in the aftermath of the Bitcoin 2022 conference in Miami. Want to submit questions? Hello and welcome to the Real Vision Daily briefing. It's Monday, April 11th, 2022. I'm Maggie Lake.

0:11.2

And here with me today is Matt Perone, the Director of Research at Janice Henderson Investors

0:16.0

and my colleague Ash Bennington, who is fresh off the Bitcoin Miami Conference. Matt,

0:21.2

it is so great to have you here on Real Vision. Thanks for having me, Maggie.

0:25.6

We're going to take a look at where we can find opportunity in this market. But we wanted to get

0:30.2

a quick update on crypto because that space is really moving today with Ash because we're once

0:36.5

again down Bitcoin, Ethereum, under pressure, Bitcoin down 7.5%, 9% for Ethereum, moving in tandem

0:45.2

with risk assets. As we've seen, Ash, the Nasdaq off 2%, S&P 500 off about 1.5%

0:52.4

down off a percent. We have the VIXUP 12% on the day. So perhaps not surprising. But Ash,

0:58.1

I'm so glad you're here. You and I crossed coasts last week, right? I was in San Diego at the macro

1:02.9

experience with the macro crowd, Real Vision, macro crowd, and you were in Miami at the Bitcoin

1:07.9

Conference. I'm curious, what were people there saying about what we're seeing with this price

1:13.1

action? Maggie, the short answer is absolutely nothing. The first thing to say is this is a Bitcoin

1:20.3

conference, not a crypto conference. So the folks down there are talking and thinking about Bitcoin

1:26.0

not over weeks and months, but over years and decades. This is especially true for Bitcoiners

1:31.0

who flew in from all over the world to attend. So look, it's a volatile asset class minus 7%

1:36.9

on the day, minus I think 12 and a half percent or there about on a trailing 7-day basis.

1:43.1

This is a volatile asset class. This isn't the sort of thing that shakes people who are interested

1:48.0

in rebuilding the financial system. Yeah, and we were just talking right before it came on air.

1:54.8

It's huge, right? I can't imagine the changes you've seen since you first started going.

2:00.5

And it seemed like there were a lot of headlines, a lot of news coming out of it.

2:05.2

Yeah, I mean, for me, the single biggest impact when you just walk on the conference floor and you
