Summary

The second installment in two episodes bringing you the voices of those with the most at stake as a disastrous No Deal Brexit threatens the island of Ireland. We speak to Orla Smyth, a businesswoman who has invested everything she had in building Belfast’s thriving Kaffe O coffee chain, only to see the prospect of tariffs, the plummeting pound and delays at the border threatening all she has worked for. A man whose house is a mile from the border tells us what it was like growing up in militarized South Armagh and how the prospect of a return to the past drove him into activism. And border integration expert Caitríona Mullan talks us through life in a cross-border household, the work that has gone into building networks across the dividing line, and how she sees people reverting to old coping mechanisms from the time of conflict to deal with the atmosphere of uncertainty. Part one of two episodes bringing you the voices of those for whom the Brexit stakes are highest. You can listen to part one here. Featuring editing by Alan Meaney http://alanmeaney.ie/ . Hi, this is 180 degrees, a new series about the changes we all need to make for a clean energy future.

0:12.0

We'll be looking at the choices we make every day in our homes and our businesses with transport technology and in our communities and as individuals. So what is a sustainable home and what do we need to do to make our houses more efficient and more comfortable?

0:26.6

I see it out there. I still see people coming up to me at exhibitions and trade fairs in there.

0:31.6

What about this piece of equipment? There's no, they have no real understanding of the very basics

0:36.6

of what makes a sustainable home.

0:38.6

And actually it's quite simple. It is about generating heat in the most efficient way that you can

0:43.8

and then keeping it in.

0:47.8

How do our decisions today affect our future?

0:50.6

I think the decisions that people make between now and 2050, they're going to be different, but they're going to be in an order that suits them best. So it's not appropriate for

0:58.0

everyone to go out tomorrow and buy an electric vehicle. One, they're not available and two, we can't

1:02.0

all afford it. So deciding, well, what can I change today? That means I can buy an electric car the

1:06.3

next time I buy a car. But these decisions are not always easy to make. When they see a sizable amount of

1:12.1

their money going towards energy upgrades where they can't see it tangibly like it's behind a wall,

1:17.7

people can't get a little bit upset, you know. And in the business world, many companies are

1:22.4

confused as to what to do. In the smaller business space, smaller public bodies, the issue is they

1:27.3

don't know

1:27.9

what things are credible or not. They don't really know if I put a PV system on my roof. Is that,

1:33.5

is that making a big step in the right direction? Or is that making a tiny step? Or is it doing anything?

1:38.5

I mean, if you're a cement company and you put PV in your head office, yeah, it looks great,

1:41.9

but you're burning tons of tires and all sorts of reclaimed waste to create your product.

1:47.6

Our energy future is all about choices, choices we can make on an individual level.

1:53.3

I'll move right to the big companies, which have, in their marketing departments, sold us
