If you venture into the mountains of the Scottish Southern Uplands through vast,

mossy rock faces and with the brown heather sprawling across the landscape,

you will reach one lockhead. There you will find a sign that reads one lockhead,

the highest village in Scotland. That's not where our journey ends. If you carry on

along the road that winds through the village, over the brow of a hill,

you'll reach another village. Lead hills.

Why do you think Lead Hills has a claim to being the highest village in Scotland?

Well, there's a red evidence that Lead Hills was considered to be the highest village.

I've got a really old book here. It's the Orden and Gazetteiro Scotland from 1893.

And if we look in the entry for Lead Hills here, and this states that Lead Hills is the highest

village in Scotland, 1,250 to 1,412 feet above sea level. So this is partly where the confusion

starts. But the confusion isn't just a quirk of history. Just up the way from Cameron's house,

I see a sign saying, bear parking here and I can't resist popping in to the teddy bear shop.
