Summary

With Brendan on vacation, the PGA Tour’s lead editor Sean Martin joins Andy to discuss the week in golf. The two start with a rousing conversation on Sean’s parenting tactics before getting into the Zurich Classic and the notable pairings. They then can't resist having a lengthy discussion of Ben An and Carl Yuan and how certain teams may have come together. The conversation then turns to the LPGA Tour's Los Angeles swing before settling on Trevor Immelman’s assistant captain picks for the Presidents Cup. Thank you to Sean for filling in for the big guy.

Now the shotgun's starting golf is full of mathematics, there's a lot of set up work that we have to do in order to make a tournament work, so I'm going to demonstrate to you just exactly how we do a shotgun start here.

And here we go.

All right, all right, all right, get to men, start your engine!

Greetings and welcome to the shotgun start podcast. Today is Wednesday, April 20th. Sean, how you doing?

0:49.6

I'm good, I'm rested, I'm recovered, I think more importantly you're recovered, Brandon may need recovery from the vacation we'll see, but I'm good.

0:58.6

He's a vacation from his vacation, for those that don't know, this is the Dilsett's tones of Sean Martin, senior editor.

1:09.6

We need editorial, even over the summer, the Friday at pga2r.com, so calling for.

1:16.6

I want to say, is this a shotgun start debut?

1:20.6

I've done the front, I think I feel like you've been on the shotgun start.

1:26.6

I've done the Friday, I'm not sure about the shotgun start, we'll see.

1:29.6

I feel like you've been on the shotgun start before.

1:33.6

You're not inside the moat, you're at pga2r entertainment, you're calling in from St. Augustine, so we've got some official cloud here.

1:42.6

How about the last couple of weeks ago?

1:45.6

I think they're great, I mean, I think Scotty Sheffler, I think you guys have mentioned it, I don't think he quite resonates with the general fan.

1:54.6

I think you guys touched on it too, one of the reasons is he was coming out of Dallas in the wake of speed.

2:00.6

Speed made the stuff that he was doing as a teenager look normal, and Sheffler comes along to the same thing.

2:06.6

He's like, well, we just saw a kid from the same town do what speed had done, but if he took Sheffler's amateur career in a vacuum, I think he would have been a can't miss kid.

2:14.6

You know, then some back injuries, late in Texas career, they kind of, you know, maybe sent him off course a little bit, but I think Scotty Sheffler, I love the game, I love the unique swing.

2:25.6

One of our freelancers did a piece for pga2r.com on kind of generational teams we want to see, and he paired Alarm Palmer and Scotty Sheffler together in part because Sheffler won Bay Hill.

2:34.6

But also, I was thinking like, a couple of guys that own their swing, unique swings, has a unique action.

2:39.6

I don't know, I think the Scotty Sheffler era, I think we'll see how long it lasts, we make errors, we pronounce them too quickly nowadays, but I'm excited for the Scotty Sheffler era, see what he does with it.

2:49.6

And then speed, I know whenever speed wins, people get excited. I think he's so relatable, like you said, that he puts himself, he makes swings, hits his ball in places that we all would hit it, but then makes birdie from there or par.
