Answering those questions that make you go, um, um, um, moment of um comes to you from A Moment of um comes to you from apm studios i'm anna g um i've always been a big fan of history especially the history of food i love learning about what people were eating at different times all around the world.

It's kind of like getting to peek into other people's kitchens and sniff what's cooking,

but through reading about history and not actually going into strangers' homes. So, way less creepy.

Anyway, you know what's really cool? The history of spices. These are usually parts of plants that

have some kind of strong flavor. Throughout history, some spices have been seen as so unique and

exotic that we get some wild stories about their origins. My favorite example of this is

cinnamon. An ancient Greek historian who lived almost 2,500 years ago wrote that cinnamon sticks were actually twigs from a giant bird's nest.

This huge bird lived on top of steep cliffs, so it took very brave spice collectors to climb up the cliffs

and break off cinnamon sticks from the nest. So obviously, the price of cinnamon had to be super high.

Just think about all the risk and probably bird insurance. Don't get me started on cliff insurance.

Now, if this story seems a little far-fetched to you,

it's because it's totally made up. The people selling cinnamon wanted to make it seem like

it was a huge risk to collect it so they could stick a high price on their product. Talk about

sensational advertising. But if cinnamon doesn't come from the spicy nests of a monster bird,

where does it come from? My friend Eva wanted to know too.
