Summary

“We don’t actually detect things in the world,” says neuroscientist and psychologist Lisa Barrett. “We infer what we expect to see.” Barrett is the author of How Emotions are Made, a book that overturns a lot of what we thought we knew about the mind and brain. For one, we aren’t as good at reading other people as we think, says Barrett. Emotions don’t live in distinct parts of the brain. They aren’t universally expressed. When it comes to expressing emotion, Barrett says, variability is the norm. She shows us how we construct emotion in the moment and how we make sense of our body’s sensations. And: She teaches us how to master a significant system of regulation that she calls “the body budget.” (For more, see The goop Podcast hub.) Don't hold anything too tightly. Just wish for it, want it, let it come from the

intention of real truth for you, and then let it go. For me our soul is like it's

0:16.8

unbound, it's limitless, but we will use words to limit ourselves. When people

stop believing that somebody's got your back or Superman's coming we turn to

ourselves and that's where you become empowered. Courageous participation attracts

positive things. I'm Gwyneth Paltrow. This is the Goop podcast, bringing together

thought leaders, culture changers, creatives, founders and CEOs, scientists,

0:47.6

doctors, healers and seekers, here to start conversations because simply asking

questions and listening has the power to change the way we see the world. Today is

0:57.8

no exception. I'll let Elise fill you in on her extraordinary guest and I'll come back

after their conversation to answer a question from one of you. If you have a

question you'd like me to get into in our next round of Ask Me Anything send it to us at Goop

on Instagram or Facebook. All right, over to Elise. Lisa Barrett is a neuroscientist,

1:18.2

professor of psychology at Northeastern University and the author of How Emotions Are Made,

1:23.6

a book about the secret life of the brain. Lisa takes what I thought I knew about emotion

1:29.0

and turns it upside down. There's a difference between what we think is happening and what is

1:34.1

actually happening and we're not as good at reading people as we think. We'll get into deciphering

1:40.4

what the sensations in our body actually mean and how our brain interprets them. We talk about

1:46.0

something called the body budget, how our brain runs it and why we should learn to look at our

bodies in this way. It was so cool to get into the science behind how our brain infers affect

1:56.8

an emotion and uses past experiences to understand what the sensations in our body mean.

And so part of the story here is that you know you're never reading someone's expression,
