Hey, you're just in time for

Experiment Merriment. Today we're experimenting with unusual ways of growing vegetables.

I've tried growing radishes in a pair of old sneakers, growing a pumpkin inside of another pumpkin,

heck I've even tried growing lettuce upside down.

So I thought it would be a cinch to grow my favorite vegetable, carrots. But no

matter what I do, I can't seem to grow them. I tried putting a whole carrot in the dirt. I tried cutting off the top of

another carrot and putting that in a bowl of water to see if it grows roots.

I even tried planting baby carrots.

But no, no new carrots.

Hmm. My friends, Stellen and Luca, must be trying to grow carrots too.

Hi, my name is Stellen. I'm from Brooklyn, New York.

My question is, where do carrot seeds come from? It's understandable why you might think that carrots have

no seeds because we don't see seeds on the harvested carrots that we eat.

I am Jeff Mitchell and I'm what's called a professor of cooperative extension

in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of California at Davis. And my job in general is to work on

research and work directly with farmers to try to help them to improve the management of their

vegetable crop production systems here in California.
